If your UniFi U7 Pro Max will not adopt, work through four checks in order. First, confirm UniFi Network is version 8.2.93 or later. Second, confirm the AP actually receives PoE+, not just PoE. Third, confirm the AP can reach the UniFi Network application over TCP port 8080, plus UDP 10001 when both are on the same VLAN. Fourth, check whether another UniFi instance still manages the AP. Save a factory reset for last.

A PoE+ injector fixes only one of these problems: a missing or insufficient power source. It cannot fix an outdated Network application, a blocked port, or an AP that another controller still manages.

Where Does U7 Pro Max Adoption Stop?

Start by naming the symptom, because each one points to a different first check. An AP that never appears points to the app version, power, or local discovery. An AP that appears but fails points to management state or TCP 8080. An AP on another VLAN or site needs Layer 3 adoption.

Symptom Check first Then check
The AP never appears in UniFi Network UniFi Network 8.2.93 or later PoE+ source, then TCP 8080 and UDP 10001 on the same VLAN
The AP appears, but adoption fails UniFi Network 8.2.93 or later and a “Managed by Other” status TCP 8080 to the Network application, then the PoE+ source
The AP is on a different VLAN or subnet Inter-VLAN routing and TCP 8080 Mobile app or SSH adoption method
The AP is at a remote site TCP 8080 reachability to the UniFi host Port forwarding, double NAT, or ZTP
The power source is non-PoE or unknown Exact switch or injector model and port PoE mode Add PoE+ power only if it falls short

With a UniFi Cloud Gateway and the AP on the same network, Ubiquiti’s standard method needs no port forwarding or manual commands: power on the AP and adopt it in the UniFi mobile app. The sections below cover what to check when that path fails.

See Ubiquiti’s device adoption guide for the standard flow.

Check UniFi Network 8.2.93 or Later First

Ubiquiti lists UniFi Network version 8.2.93 or later as the U7 Pro Max’s application requirement. Check this first because it is the quickest check, and no power or network fix can make up for an application that is too old. Update the Network application, then retry adoption before you change anything else.

The requirement appears under Application Requirements on Ubiquiti’s U7 Pro Max tech specs page.

Confirm the AP Gets PoE+, Not Just PoE

The U7 Pro Max’s official power method is PoE+, with a maximum power consumption of 25W. Look up the exact model of your switch or injector and the PoE mode of the port you are using. A lit LED or an entry in the device list does not by itself prove that the source meets the PoE+ requirement.

U7 Pro Max spec Official value What it means for adoption
Power method PoE+ A port described only as “PoE” needs its spec checked
Max. power consumption 25W The figure to compare with your power source
Supported voltage range 44–57V DC Part of the official power specification
Networking interface (1) 1/2.5 GbE RJ45 port A 1 GbE link is supported
UniFi Network Version 8.2.93 and later Required before adoption can work

PoE+ and 2.5 GbE are separate conditions. A 1 GbE link keeps the AP’s uplink below its 2.5 GbE rating, but that is a performance limit, not an adoption failure.

If the U7 Pro Max Never Shows Pending Adoption

When the AP and a CloudKey or self-hosted Network application share a VLAN, a powered AP should appear as Pending Adoption. If it never appears, Ubiquiti says to make sure TCP 8080 and UDP 10001 are open on every gateway, firewall, and antivirus tool between the UniFi host and the AP.

Also confirm:

  • The UniFi host is set up and running UniFi Network.
  • The AP is powered on from a PoE+ source you have verified.
  • The AP and the host are on the same VLAN. If they are not, skip to the cross-VLAN section below.
  • For a self-hosted application on a PC, the PC’s own firewall or antivirus is not blocking TCP 8080 or UDP 10001.

Keep the two ports straight. For same-VLAN discovery, Ubiquiti lists both TCP 8080 and UDP 10001. For different-VLAN and remote adoption, its requirement centers on TCP 8080.

If It Appears but Adoption Fails

If the AP shows up but will not finish adopting, check whether it says Managed by Other, then confirm TCP 8080 to the Network application. Managed by Other means another UniFi application instance still manages the AP, and Ubiquiti notes this can happen after the UniFi console itself was factory restored.

An AP that appears is discoverable, but that does not prove its power and ports are fine. For Managed by Other, Ubiquiti offers three fixes:

  • Restore the UniFi console from a backup in which the AP was already managed.
  • Factory restore the AP, then adopt it again.
  • Reassign the AP in the UniFi Network mobile app. Only the account owner can do this, and only if they signed in to the app while the AP was still managed.

If you self-host, run the UniFi Network software on one machine only. Ubiquiti warns that installing it on another computer creates a completely new instance rather than a second window into the same one. To manage your network from another device, connect to the existing server instead.

See Ubiquiti’s factory reset guidance for the management state options.

Adopting Across VLANs or From a Remote Site

Adopting across VLANs, subnets, or sites is Layer 3 adoption, and Ubiquiti requires unrestricted TCP 8080 between the AP and the UniFi Network application. If both sit on separate VLANs behind the same local gateway, enable inter-VLAN routing and make sure the firewall does not block TCP 8080.

If your Wi-Fi already broadcasts on the same VLAN as the unadopted AP, the mobile app is the simplest method. Put the AP in its factory-default state, connect your phone to Wi-Fi on that VLAN, open your site in the UniFi Network app, and adopt the AP from the device list. If that is not possible, use SSH.

See Ubiquiti’s Layer 3 adoption guide for these methods and network requirements.

Adopt with SSH and set-inform

The SSH method takes 5 steps.

  1. Confirm the AP is in its factory-default state.
  2. Connect a laptop to the network with a wired connection.
  3. SSH into the AP.
  4. Run set-inform http://ip-of-host:8080/inform, replacing ip-of-host with the address of your UniFi Network host.
  5. Open UniFi Site Manager or the UniFi mobile app and adopt the AP shown as ready to adopt.

Adopting at a remote site

For an AP at another site, the UniFi Network host must be reachable over TCP 8080 from where the AP sits. What that takes depends on where the host runs. One setup, a remote gateway with a private WAN address behind double NAT, cannot use this method at all, according to Ubiquiti.

Where the UniFi Network host runs What Ubiquiti requires
Official UniFi Hosting, or a console with a public IP address Your local firewall or gateway allows the AP to reach it over TCP 8080
Behind a remote gateway that has a public IP address Port forward TCP 8080 from that gateway to the host running the Network application
Behind a remote gateway with a private WAN IP (double NAT) This method will not work; Ubiquiti suggests contacting your ISP

Ubiquiti also offers Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) for Layer 3 hosted setups, and its Layer 3 adoption article lists U7 Pro Max APs as currently supported.

Forwarding a port exposes a service to the internet. Forward only what the setup requires, only to the UniFi host, and review your gateway’s security settings before and after the change. On a business or shared network, involve whoever manages it before you open anything.

Use a Factory Reset Only When It Fits

Ubiquiti treats a factory reset as the last resort for same-VLAN adoption, not the first fix. It does matter in two cases: Layer 3 methods that need the AP in its factory-default state, and an AP stuck as Managed by Other. Even then, the physical reset button does not remove the AP from the old application.

Ubiquiti says removing the AP from an application it was adopted to is done under the Manage section of the device’s settings in that application. Repeated physical resets alone will not clear the old application’s record of the AP.

When a 2.5G PoE+ Injector Helps, and When It Won’t

A PoE+ injector fixes only a power-source problem: a port with no PoE, a source confirmed as PoE but not PoE+, or a source confirmed to fall short of PoE+. If the source is unknown, check its model and port mode or test with a known PoE+ source before buying. It will not fix an outdated UniFi Network version, blocked TCP 8080, missing inter-VLAN routing, or an AP still managed by another UniFi instance.

Your situation Will an injector help?
The current Ethernet source has no PoE Yes. It adds the PoE+ power the AP requires.
The source is confirmed as PoE but not PoE+ Yes. It closes the gap to the official requirement.
You cannot confirm the source supports PoE+ Possibly. Check the exact model and port first; swapping to a known PoE+ source can also isolate a power fault.
PoE+ is already confirmed Unlikely. Check version, VLANs, TCP 8080, and management state first.
UniFi Network is below 8.2.93, TCP 8080 is blocked, or the AP is Managed by Other No.

If you do need one, choose a 2.5G model. The reason is not adoption, since a 1 GbE link works, but to avoid capping the AP’s 2.5 GbE uplink at the injector.

FAQ

Will a PoE+ injector fix “Adoption Failed”?

Only when the problem is power. If your current port has no PoE, provides PoE but not PoE+, an injector can address the power gap. If the source is unknown, check its model and port mode or test with a known PoE+ source before buying. It will not help with an outdated Network application, blocked TCP 8080, missing inter-VLAN routing, or an AP managed by another instance.

Why does my U7 Pro Max say “Managed by Other”?

Another UniFi application instance still manages it. This can happen after the UniFi console was factory restored, or after self-hosted software was installed on a second machine. Restore a backup in which the AP was managed, factory restore and re-adopt the AP, or reassign it in the mobile app as the account owner.

How We Researched

This article is based on manufacturer documentation, official support materials, and community reports where available. We have not conducted hands-on lab testing. Any performance figures or compatibility claims are attributed to official sources or clearly identified community reports.

Our sources were Ubiquiti’s U7 Pro Max tech specs, its Help Center articles on device adoption, Layer 3 adoption, and factory resets, and TRENDnet’s TPE-215GI specifications, compiled with a Deep Research report. Community reports we reviewed did not isolate a repeatable cause, so this guide does not rely on them.

Conclusion

Fix U7 Pro Max adoption in order: confirm UniFi Network 8.2.93 or later, verify a real PoE+ source, open TCP 8080 (plus UDP 10001 on the same VLAN), and clear any Managed by Other state. Treat a factory reset as the last resort, and buy an injector only when power is the confirmed gap.
